Top Vietnamese scholars will study at NIU
DeKalb, IL. — A new agreement between Northern Illinois University
and the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) will bring top scholars to
DeKalb to pursue their doctoral degrees.
Congress created and funds the VEF, based in Washington, D.C., to promote
closer bilateral relations with Vietnam through scholarships and educational
exchange programs. (Read

NIU aids launch of high-tech sensor company
DeKalb, IL – A new company planning on doing big things with tiny
technology has a better chance to succeed, thanks in no small part to
Northern Illinois University.
Working in conjunction with faculty at NIU's College of Engineering and
Engineering Technology, the DeKalb-based Nano Micro Solutions found important
technical support to start production and key business expertise to aid
in getting those products to market.
The company was founded by John Sterbling and Len Wardzala, former employees
of the recently closed AG Communications. The two men saw an unfilled
market niche in industry for specialized sensors utilizing the latest
in micro and nano technology. They had the technical backgrounds to make
the project work, but realized that they would need more than that to

Research helps open door to nanoscale machines
Argonne, IL. — Researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s
Argonne National Laboratory and Northern Illinois University have found
that very thin materials can still retain an electric polarization, opening
the potential for a wide range of tiny devices. (Read

NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology and UGS expand opportunities
for future engineers
Plano, Texas, and DeKalb, IL. – Engineering students returning
to Northern Illinois University (NIU) in the fall will find an array of
new software at their fingertips thanks to a $14 million grant to the
NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology from UGS, a leading
global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services.
