Classification- Graduate
application or Student-at-Large application?
Students may be admitted
to graduate-level study in either of two classifications:
A Graduate student is a student
who has applied to and been admitted to the Graduate School, upon
recommendation of the program faculty, to pursue a specific graduate
program (see Fields of Study) [Download
graduate application]
A Student-at-Large is a student
who has applied for and been given permission by the Graduate School
to enroll in courses for graduate credit, but who is not at the
time admitted to the Graduate School to pursue a graduate degree.

Application for Study As
a Student-at-Large
Submission of the completed
student-at-large application form does not require an application
fee and is not constrained by the application deadline
dates indicated above for application for admission to the Graduate
School. However, a student must either have permission to enroll
as a student-at-large or be admitted to the Graduate School in order
to take courses for graduate credit.
Credit accumulated as a student-at-large
will not necessarily be counted toward a graduate degree, if the
student is later admitted to the Graduate School (consult the Graduate
Catalog). International students on F-1 or on J-1 student visa
status are not eligible to be students-at-large. A student-at-large
who intends to pursue a graduate degree should apply for admission
to the Graduate School as soon as possible.
